Historical Significance of Harpers Ferry

Even prior to West Virginia becoming its own state, the small town of Harpers Ferry played a significant role in American history. In 1859, famed abolitionist John Brown led a raid on the town in order to use weapons from the local armory to free local slaves.

During the Civil War, both the Unionists and the Confederates wanted control of Harpers Ferry. This was due mainly in part to the town’s strategic location at the convergence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, as well as the local railway access. Control over the town actually changed hands eight times!

They even have sushi here! But the real claim to fame is the authentic Hibachi. While you don’t get quite the same experience as you would at a Hibachi table, the food is every bit as good.
