Harpers Ferry is known for its significant American history, specifically during the Civil War. The historic town was home to many Civil War battlefields with both Confederate and Union victories.
The most famous local landmark is the Battle of Harpers Ferry. Confederate forces defeated Union troops in September 1862, leading to the largest capture of Union soldiers during the Civil War. The Battle of Antietam took place two days later and is known as the bloodiest day in American history.
Harpers Ferry is also home to Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, which includes sites like Abolitionist John Brown’s fort, where John Brown’s Raid took place, St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, and the Battle of Bolivar Heights.
