In the summer you can walk just a short distance to the nearby Mountain Lake Club for food, local craft beer, live music on the beach, and boat rentals (entrance fee required for the beach)! If you want to explore, Appalachian Trail access is just a couple miles away, historic Harpers Ferry is just a 20 min drive away, and Virginia wine country is just next door.

Cancellation policy
For a full refund Guest must cancel at least 21 full days prior to listing’s local check-in time. For a 50% refund, Guest must cancel at least 7 full days before the listing’s local check in time. If the guest cancels less than 7 days in advance or decides to leave early after check-in, the nights not spent will not be refunded.

We are committed to Rent Responsibly standards. This means we follow best-in-class guidelines to ensure you have a peaceful, safe and memorable stay with us. We care a lot about maintaining good relationships with our community, so we appreciate you following these “house rules” during your stay.
LODGING AGREEMENT: The guest booking the property must digitally sign a lodging agreement immediately following the reservation. The most important terms of the agreement are included below, and the guest may cancel a booking penalty free within 24 hours. If the lodging agreement is not completed with 24 hours then the reservation will be cancelled. The agreement will be sent via text message, so please be sure your phone number is correct before booking.
AGE 25 OR OLDER TO BOOK: The guest booking the property must be 25 years of age or older. We reserve the right to request a photo or scan of a government-issued photo ID. The guest who books must stay at the property–you may not book for others if you do not intend to stay at the property.
QUIET HOURS START AT 10 PM: Our property’s quiet hours of 10 pm to 6 am are required by county ordinance and enforced by local police. If the police respond to a noise complaint, every individual on the property may face a misdemeanor criminal charge and be subject to a fine by the county of $300. Failure to abide by the county noise ordinance will result in the immediate termination of the stay without refund.
Past noise complaints have always come from groups of 20-somethings. If you are booking for a group that may want to play loud music at any time then do not book this property or cancel your reservation if you have already booked. Find another place for your trip so you do not have your trip terminated early and without refund.
NOISE MONITORING AND SECURITY CAMERA: We use devices that measure volume levels throughout the property (like a smoke detector but for noise) and allow us to respond to noise nuisances before the police are called. The devices are triggered primarily by sustained periods of loud music, not things like loud talking or laughter (which is encouraged!). The devices do not record audio and are 100% privacy compliant. We also have a security camera that records the front door and driveway. This allows us to facilitate remote check in and monitor the property between guests.
ACCIDENT FORGIVENESS: Every stay is backed by our accident forgiveness program. Guests will not be held responsible for damage caused during their stay (up to a maximum of $1,500) if 1) the damage is accidental, and 2) the damage is reported as soon as possible, and by no later than the check out time.
POSSIBLE BACKGROUND CHECK: We reserve the right to use a third-party to verify the guest’s identity and check criminal databases to finalize the reservation. Complete terms regarding the guest verification are provided in the lodging agreement, and can be provided sooner upon request.
NO PETS: No exceptions, sorry. Please don’t ask whether we can allow your perfectly house-trained, hypoallergenic labradoodle to join because we can’t 🙂
LIMITED PARKING: The driveway only has enough parking for two cars. Please do not bring more than two cars to the house.
SNOW-INS: During the winter, there is a good chance that a significant snow storm could restrict access in and out of the cottage. The roads are plowed, but not always promptly. 4 wheel drive is highly recommended in the event of a snow storm, and you need to use good judgement as to whether to cancel a trip before it begins or leave the cottage early.
FIREPLACE: You are encouraged to use the fireplace as long as you do so carefully! Always keep the fireplace door securely shut unless you are actively putting logs inside the stove. The fireplace can get very hot, so be sure to keep small children away whenever a fire is burning. We do not guarantee there will be firewood or fire starter at the house, so it is best to bring your own. The River Country Store 1.5 mi away sells bundles of wood.
SMOKING: Smoking is never allowed inside the house. You may smoke outside as long as you clean up after yourself. You may not litter cigarette butts on the deck, in the yard, or anywhere else–butts must go in the trash after they have cooled off.
SHEETS: At the end of your stay, please strip the sheets off the beds that were used and leave the sheets on top of the beds.
PARKING: There is room for up to 4 cars in the driveway, but if parking more than 2 cars, you might have to box in other cars by parking behind them. The garage is not available to guests and will be locked during your stay.
BRING OR RENT YOUR OWN BOATS: We do not offer kayaks or other boats to guests. The Mountain Lake Club on the lake does rent boats from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
BUGS: This is a cottage in the woods–that means there are lots of bugs, especially in the summertime. Even if you are very careful, some of those bugs will find their way into the house. You must also carefully clean up the kitchen every night and securely package up all food to keep out bugs and mice. We have had to deal with mice before and no one wants that again!
SEPTIC SYSTEM: This house has a septic system. Grease and oil must never be allowed down any of the sink drains. Feminine hygiene products must be thrown away in a trash can and not flushed down a toilet. Never flush solid trash down the toilet or into a sink drain.
NO FIREWORKS: Fireworks are not allowed.
NO FIREARMS: Guests may not bring firearms or ammunition inside the house.
NO ILLEGAL DRUGS: Guests may not possess or consume any illegal drugs on the property, including cannabis.

There was just the two of us, we cooked, enjoyed morning Coffee on the front pouch and the view of the lake. spent some time on the back deck enjoying some wildlife and reading time.
This would be a wonderful place for a large family group to spend sometime together, three floor layout is wonderful for milt-family.

We had a wonderful and peaceful stay! The home was clean and offered just enough amenities and space for my family of 5. It was within walking distance to the lake but definitely not close to restaurants or shopping so plan accordingly. Checking in and out was super easy. We would definitely stay here again.

The house was so much more then we could have ever expected, it was absolutely beautiful, close to an amazing lake and the host was amazing, I was a pain in the a$$ tenant on this one which is not normal for me but just had a rough few days and she answered everything I asked quickly, effectively and without judgement which was so helpful as I was already off my rocker with 2 kids and a MIL all acting like 2 year olds 🤣 absolutely would love to go back there was an amazing little private beach club within walking distance and everyone there was just as friendly and easy to talk to it was an amazing get away!

The home was comfortable with several spots for three friends to gather, (and is easily roomy enough for a larger group). We especially enjoyed the front deck with a little lake view. Biking from Shepherdstown was fun. The food at Lake House is simple yet tasty!

Our family spent a weekend at the cottage. It was both beautiful and clean. The porch was amazing and you can get a peek of the lake from it. They provided coffee beans for 2 days so that worked perfect for us.
We had 6 guest (4 teenagers and 2 adults). We had plenty of room to spread out. There was also plenty of TV sitting in the living room so the kids didn’t have to sit on the floor.
The beach club is a 5 min walk. You can get a day pass for $10 adult/$5 kids. We spent all day there hanging out on the beach, renting kayaks and eating in there restaurant. We did head into Harpers Ferry for several hours but returned to the Mountain Beach Club since it was a perfect fit for the kids.
We definitely will be back!

We enjoyed the home and had an excellent experience until the hottest day of the year arrived and the AC upstairs didn’t work. We purchased a fan, but are a family of 5. Wish the AC hadn’t malfunctioned as it was incredibly hot upstairs. But otherwise, house was beautiful, equipped with everything needed, quiet and relaxing. Plenty of room for kids to play- in basement or basketball outside.

We did have some trouble finding wood for the fire pit, but I spoke with the Mountain Mama manager and they are hoping to have wood available at the cottage in the future since it can be difficult to buy locally. The rooms were clean and well maintained and we never ran out of things to do in the area to keep everyone busy. We had great communication the whole way through that was very friendly and helpful. The kitchen has all the basics you probably need but would be improved with some additions like serving bowls, serving spoons, better knives, etc. Really nothing to complain about, just items that would make it better. Also, the master closet is locked and not usable. I understand that the owners would keep their things in there, so maybe a few hooks on the backs of some of the doors would suffice, for those of us that like to hang a few things, would be helpful. Truly a wonderful location and beautiful house! We’d love to come back sometime…

Was sparkling clean upon walk in. The location was so convenient to the lake and also to the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. It had everything we needed and lots of space. The hosts were attentive when we needed but otherwise didn’t bother us and were super friendly. All the instructions were super organized. I plan to stay here again in the future.

We weren’t able to stay in the home long due to a crazy storm knocking out power for days but the home is beautiful. It’s very family friendly, clean and beautifully styled. Wish we could have enjoyed it longer.
Mountain Mama was absolutely wonderful, they communicated quickly and thoroughly. They provided another equally beautiful place to stay after the power went out from a nasty storm.
Mountain Mama properties will be my first choice from now on.

Mountain Mama provided a beautiful, clean, and serene stay while we visited West Virginia recently. The home was beautiful with ample room to sleep all of our guests comfortably.
