September Weather in Harpers Ferry
September brings much cooler weather to Harpers Ferry. Typically, high temperatures are in the 70s, while lows are in the 50s. The weather is pleasant and cool, with moderate rainfall throughout the month. This mild weather makes it perfect for exploring the town of Harpers Ferry and surrounding areas. And if it’s a little wet? Harpers Ferry has a rain plan for you!
Since the weather can be cool in the mornings and nights and warm throughout the day, we recommend packing layers in September. Bring what you need to enjoy the many outdoor adventures, including hiking shoes, a rain jacket, and comfortable clothing. Don’t forget your sun gear, too!
September Activities in Harpers Ferry
1. Hike the Appalachian Trail
September provides the best weather to hit the hiking trails nearby. Some of our go-to hikes include the Loudoun Heights Trail, the Maryland Heights Trail, and Jefferson Rock.
Loudoun Heights is a 6-mile round trip, moderate hike with multiple overlooks of the rivers, Harpers Ferry, and the Shenandoah Valley. Maryland Heights Trail offers a few different routes ranging from 4.5 miles to 6.5 miles.
Jefferson Rock is a must-visit. This popular spot is just a short hike from the center of activity in Lower Town, making it accessible to people who are not ready for one of the longer trails. When you reach Jefferson Rock, you’ll find incredible views of the Blue Ridge mountains and both rivers.
Finally, you can’t visit Harpers Ferry without stepping foot on the Appalachian Trail. Harpers Ferry is home to the “Halfway Point” of the AT, marked by the Appalachian Trail Conservatory Headquarters.
2. Tour Civil War Battlefields in Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry is the location of many significant events in American Civil War history. In fact, the whole town is part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.
Perhaps the most famous landmark is the Battle of Harpers Ferry, which took place in September 1862. Led by Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, Confederate forces defeated Union troops, leading to the largest capture of Union soldiers during the Civil War.
Just two days later, the Battle of Antietam took place, concluding with a Union victory. This was marked as the bloodiest day in American history.
Other notable landmarks include Abolitionist John Brown’s fort, where John Brown’s Raid took place, and the Battle of Bolivar Heights, located on the town’s west side.
As you can see, Harpers Ferry has a lot of rich history to explore. Take advantage of the September weather and walk from the Harpers Ferry Visitor Center to Lower Town, exploring the many Civil War battlefields along the way.
3. Enjoy the Views from “The Point”
The town of Harpers Ferry sits at the confluence of the Potomac River and Shenandoah River. “The Point” is a lookout spot right where the rivers meet in the Blue Ridge mountains, offering beautiful views and a peaceful spot to relax. 4. Experience a Ghost Tour

The Ghost Tours of Harpers Ferry by “O’ Be JoyFull” is the oldest ghost tour in America. The two-hour walking tour takes visitors around the historic Lower Town neighborhood of Harpers Ferry, stopping at numerous haunted sites along the way.

The tours take place at 8 pm every Monday to Saturday during the month of September. You will walk about 14 blocks during this tour, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
