The Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a National Park Service park that includes many historic sites throughout the town of Harpers Ferry. There’s nothing better on a crisp winter day than grabbing a warm drink and exploring the park on foot. We recommend starting at the Visitor Center in Lower Town and touring historic buildings such as John Brown’s Fort, St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, and the blacksmith’s shop.

From Lower Town, you can access many hiking trails, such as Maryland Heights Trail and Loudoun Heights Trail. For one of the most popular hikes in the area, take the Maryland Heights Trail until you reach the Potomac River, where you’ll find incredible views of Harpers Ferry and beyond.

Jefferson Rock is also a must-visit in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. This popular spot along the Appalachian Trail offers great views of Harpers Ferry, the mountains, and the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

There are many Civil War battlegrounds throughout Harpers Ferry, so check out our full guide before your winter stroll.

2. Go Snow Tubing

Nothing quite screams winter like snow tubing. Lucky for you, there are incredible snow tubing opportunities right here in Harpers Ferry. River Riders is a local tubing company that offers river tubing in the summer and snow tubing in the winter. They make their own snow, so you never have to worry about checking the forecast for snow before your trip.

River Riders provides 1.5 hours of unlimited snow tubing down their hill, which is the size of three football fields! Once you’re done with your rides, head to their onsite restaurant and warm up with delicious grub.
